Previous Work - Before 2014

La Marie Antoinette Moderne (2014)

In La Marie Antoinette Moderne Alice uses the character Marie Antoinette as a symbol for a powershift. During Marie Antoinette’s reign the French Revolution started. This caused a powershift from the aristocrats to the common people.

Nowadays the power shifts from the Western world towards new leading economies, the so-called BRIC countries. In this fashion series Alice fantasizes how the cultures of

the uprising economies influence the old world and shape new fashion icons, like Marie Antoinette once was.

Actress: Victoria Koblenko / Styling: Fleur Feringa / Make-up: Joyce Clerkx / Hair: Martin Wentzel.

The Amsterdam Canals (2013)

The 400 year celebration of the Amsterdam Canals inspired Alice to create a series about her hometown.

Alice wondered what had changed throughout the past four centuries. In the Rijksmuseum Alice found the Canalbook (1768 – 1771) from Caspar Jacobsz. Philips, which depict the state of each canal house at that time. Hence this book was a perfect guide to learn about the changes since the golden century.

Alice printed the pages of Philips’ book and walked alongside the canals for days. Then she went back to the places that caught her attention, took photographs of the current

situation, and layered Caspar Philips’ drawing on top of it.

In the meanwhile Alice had created a personal library of figures throughout the art history of Amsterdam. Figures from paintings, etchings, drawing and old photographs from Amsterdam masters like Rembrandt, Romeyn de Hooghe and Jacob Olie. Putting these elements together, as pieces of a puzzle, she brought her fantasy to live and depicted how the canals changed and people had lived alongside the canals for centuries.

Russian Women (2013)

In collaboration with actress Victoria Koblenko, Alice created an art project which explores stereotypes about Russian Women. The association that often comes to mind while thinking of Russian women is quiet obvious, the mail-order bride. In Russian

Women Wielinga explores other ways women have been viewed throughout Russian history. Studying Russian art reveals other stereotypes of women. In three diptychs Alice showed how opposite female images, might have more in common then we might think at first sight.

The Fashion Protest

Alice presented the series Russian Women during the Floating Fashion Week on the Amsterdam Canals. Her action caught the attention of the international news.

Gallos Finos (2012)

About illegal cockfights in Cuba
Cockfighting has been introduced in Cuba by the Spanjards during the ten-year war from 1868 till 1878 between the Cuban people and the Spanish colonial power. The cockfights were introduced by the Spanjards as a truce. A replacement for the fights, which gave a breather for three days in a very violent period. Gambling made these cockfights illegal since the Cultural Revolution in 1959. While a version for tourists

remains legal without the gambling, illegal fights continue in utter secrecy as a way to earn extra income under a communist regime despite risking imprisonment of up to twenty years. In 2012 Alice travelled into the inlands of the island to photograph these illegal games and to create an artwork that played with western prejudices about these, often seen as brutal, cockfights.

Time Lapse in Beijing (2010 - 2011)

The series Time Lapse In Beijing describes a lapse in time. The series illustrates the possibilities of what would happen should three important historical periods occur at the same time. The periods consist of Imperial China, the Cultural Revolution Era and post-Olympic modern China. Characters from these eras meet and cause a comical generation/cultural clash at the Forbidden City and Summer Palace of Beijing.

The panoramas are greatly inspired by artifacts and paintings from the Qing Dynasty.

Alice came across these items at the Royal Academy of Arts while she was living in London. The series is an outcome of Alice’s fascination with these particular Chinese paintings that convey rich stories and are vast in detail.

In addition to the panoramas, Alice has recreated a portrait of Cixi, the last empress of China. The original 1905 portrait was by the Dutch painter, Hubert Vos. The Original portrait is now being exhibited at the Summer Palace in Beijing.

Punk Princess (2009)

The Punk Princess series is closely related to Alice’s personal life. This series represents the emotions Alice felt while going through a heartbreak. The character Punk Princess began as a sweet and naïve girl who eventually grew into a strong and confident

woman throughout the series. The skulls and hearts symbolize the character of Punk Princess, which is sweet and girlish, but at the same time strong and brave.
